Thanksgiving & Ice Hockey!

Hi friends! This week’s blog is all my Thanksgiving weekend, the random bucket list items I crossed off and basically being famous on instagram lol. Let’s jump in!

First off, I crossed off life bucket list item #219 super bright and early on Thanksgiving day: run in a 5k turkey day run/turkey trot! It was such a fun race, definitely doing it again next year and hopefully having more of my friends/family join me! I took a picture with Tom the turkey, ran the entire race without stopping (except to drink water and grab some pumpkin and cranberry pie at the pie aid station lol), and shaved off 8 minutes from my last 5k! Woo, talk about success. It’s actually a little unfortunate that I got a little busy (lazy really lol) and stopped training so I hadn’t gone running in about 1 month and then I did the race…and definitely felt it the next 2 days when I was super sore but I feel great now! Lol!

Thanksgiving was really nice and relaxing with my family. My tamales were a hit lol and we had a lot of great food and company and even played some Mexican volleyball which is basically regular volleyball with no rules, everyone has a beer in their hands as they play, it’s all Mexicans and you bring a crib to the backyard and put the kids in there lol#ThanksgivingWithHispanics hahahaha

I intentionally tried not to make any plans this Thanksgiving weekend because I just wanted to relax and spend time with family but as always, life happens and plans happen. I did a post Thanksgiving hike to burn off the 5,000 calories consumed on Thanksgiving day but we decided to do an ‘easy’ nature walk…which wasn’t really easy at all lol (looking at you Nature Trail on Squaw/Piestewa Peak). That same night, I crossed off life bucket list item #44 and went to an Arizona Coyotes game (my very first NHL game!). And let me tell you, I learned a lot in my very first pro hockey experience lol.

NHL time: Saturday night I had the chance to cross off life bucket list item #44: go to an Arizona Coyotes ice hockey game and it was awesome because Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona hooked my little sister and me up with some great suite VIP tickets! Thank you BBBS!!! Everyone, please consider becoming a Big and making a huge impact in a little person’s life (info here). Anyway, the hockey game was super fun and I posted a picture on instagram and the official instagram account for the Arizona Coyotes hockey team liked and commented on my picture…which was awesome! I’ve gone to only one ice hockey game (U of A college hockey game vs ASU my senior year) so I’m kind of a newbie when it comes to hockey. Which means that I had to google a few things during the game to fully understand what was going on…here are a few of the questions that I googled and the answers, enjoy! LOL

#1: How many periods are in a hockey game?

I asked this question because on the score board I saw that we were in ‘period 1’ which I had never heard of before, it just sounded weird lol. I googled and was informed that there are three 20 minute periods of hockey.

#2: What’s a penalty kill?

I asked this question because the words ‘penalty kill’ were blasted on the score board. Here is what google told me: when a team has minus one or more players on the ice as a result of a player being removed due to a penalty is often referred to as being in the ‘penalty kill’ mode.

#3: Is kicking other opponents allowed in hockey?

So I’ve heard of fights breaking out in hockey, but I literally saw a hockey player kick another player during the game on Saturday so I was wondering if kicking was allowed lol. This is what google told me: kicking is not allowed lol

#4: What is the area called where the hockey players sit?

I was just curious…google told me: it is simply called the bench lol

And here are a few things that I learned from my first ever hockey game (that will definitely not be the last one I go to):

#1: The Canadian National Anthem is sung when the other team is from Canada. I should have known this, but I was just caught off guard. Beautiful song!

#2: Every time a goal is scored, the entire team comes together in a super cute and adorable hug. I wish my team at work hugged every time we accomplished something cool lol

#3: When players are switching out, they literally jump over the little wall in front of the bench. I just cracked up every single time because they all looked like college students jumping a wall to rush a football field lol

#4: Jeffreys is my new favorite Arizona Coyotes player because he scored an EPIC goal.

#5: Hockey is a really fun sport, and I will definitely keep coming back!!

So that was my Saturday evening, the next morning we spent all day in Maricopa visiting family and we tried a bucket list restaurant called Freddy’s which WAS DELICIOUS and had the best custard I’ve ever tasted. And the official instagram account for Freddy’s also liked and commented on my picture which was pretty cool. Definitely try Freddy’s…it’s similar to In N Out except better because they have chicken and I like chicken lol.

Thanks for reading 🙂
