If you like beautiful beaches, delicious food and amazing culture, then you need to take a trip to Puerto Rico! Check out all of my food and drink recommendations for when you visit!
Puerto Rico
BACARDI DISTILLERY
First stop in Puerto Rico had to be the Bacardi Distillery Factory where 85% of the rum consumed in the world is made! Yes the weather is perfect and yes the rum tastes 1000 times better here!
COCONUT DRINK AT CULEBRA ISLAND
Drink from a coconut on a beautiful island? CHECK!
CHOCOBAR CORTES
Having a very chocolate-y morning in Old San Juan today! Who wants a chocolate souvenir?
PINONES
No trip is complete without me eating all of the local cuisine! In Puerto Rico, I was introduced to Chicken Pinchos aka Kabobs. The word pinchos is Spanish for spikes which makes sense, right? Pinchos are sold all over the island and we found them at The Piñones which is an area outside of San Juan. It’s a scenic road with a beautiful ocean view and vendors selling delicious food like pinchos! Not sure what I enjoyed more: the food or the view. The chicken was so tasty and the BBQ glaze was just the cherry on top! Highly recommend!
PONCE ICE CREAM
If this picture makes you want to lick your phone screen, then you and I are the same person. I had the most delicious mani (peanut) ice cream while exploring the streets of Ponce, Puerto Rico.
Arizona
PHOENIX COQUI
If you’ve never had Puerto Rican food before, you need to stop what you’re doing and head over to Phoenix Coqui in Arizona. Their food is so delicious and the owners are so nice (we met one of the co-owners the last time we stopped by).
I always get the mofongo (kind of like mashed potatoes but with plantains and other delicious seasonings) with pernil (marinated pork typically served during Christmas in Puerto Rico).
I also tried their quesito bites (cream cheese filled puff pastry) and they were so good! My friend tried all of their empanadas and her fave was the beef. Highly recommend!
PUERTO RICO LATIN BAR AND GRILL
Doesn’t this pernil (shredded pork roast) and mofongo (mashed plantain) look amazing?! If you’ve never had Puerto Rican food, you need to stop and google the nearest restaurant. It is one of my top cuisines because there’s so much flavor in every dish. I always associate pernil with Christmas because I had it for the first time when I was in Puerto Rico for Christmas. If you’re in Phoenix and craving PR food, look no further than Puerto Rico Latin Bar and Grill!
