Punalu’u Beach: This Black Sand Beach Belongs On Your Kona Bucket List!

The beach I was most excited to visit in Kona was Punaluʻu Beach, a black sand beach! Never in my life have I seen a beach like this, it felt truly surreal. If you’re like me, you are probably wondering why the sand is black…well I am here to educate! The black sand is made of basalt and created by lava flowing into the ocean which explodes as it reaches the ocean and cools.

As soon as we arrived, we saw that you could get super fresh coconut and we of course did!

It was so fresh and delicious!

There was a picnic area on the beach so the next time we visit, we will for sure pack a lunch!

It was so cool to see the black sand! It definitely looked photoshopped or dyed but it was not.

What I love the most about this beach was that it wasn’t as busy as the other beaches we had visited on this trip.

Another fun thing to do while you’re exploring this beautiful black sand beach, is to take a drive to the Southernmost bakery in the USA and buy the most delicious malasadas!

I had the best time and cannot wait to return. I hope this post inspires you to visit The Big Island!
